Inside the Pocket God Phenomenon: Then, Now, & Soon

Author: TapDatApp // Category:

On January 9th of 2009, Bolt Creative published an app for the iPhone & iTouch that would go on to set records. Starting out with a simple concept where the user controls a bunch of islanders, the app was the first ever to introduce constant "Episodes", otherwise known as updates where new features would be added at least once a month. Now with over 25 updates in its history, it has become one of the most popular apps of all time and created an insanely massive following of fans. Today, we will explore this game and reflect on the huge impact it has had on the "iDevice" world. And despite previous fantastic sale-rates, some fans are starting to question the app, the creators, and how long the fad will and can last. For the first time in the game's history, regular players have left some negative feedback on the app's page on iTunes. Some are unsatisfied with its latest direction, some think the app is becoming over-crowded with features that don't match up to their suggestions, and some simply think it has lost its fun quality. How did this all start? How has the app changed? and Where does it all go from here? It's time to find out, because this is:
"Inside the Pocket God Phenomenon: Then, Now, & Soon"

--------------------------------------------~THEN~----------------------------------------------
Pocket God was created by the duo-team of programmer Dave Castelnuovo & designer Allan Dye. They have stated in interviews that they got inspiration for the game and its crazy characters from watching shows such as South Park. After the launch of Pocket God (which was not immediately a success), Allan & Dave chose a very smart marketing move by introducing new "episodes/updates", which added new features so that their customers could continue to constantly get more out of the game. Soon, Pocket God was being updated on a regular basis of every 2 weeks or so. The game started to attract a lot of attention and climbed its way up to the top of the Top 100 Paid Apps List. It reached a large peak of popularity around May during the Dinosaur Island Trilogy Updates (Episodes 15, 16, & 17). And during the summer season, it remained in the Top 10 for an extensive period of time. It was official: Pocket God was a huge hit!

-------------------------------------------~NOW~-------------------------------------------------
As of September 25th, there has been 26 Episodes in total. Pocket God now contains a huge variety of features, mini-games, etc. This includes: Volcano, Gravity Effects, Earthquake, Storms, Day-Evening-Night Change, Dancing, Giant Boulder, Vampire Bat, Hurricane, Fishing, Fire Ants, Naming-Process, Dinosaur, Tsunami, Fire, Dodo Bird, Doodle Jump-Based Mini-Game, Harbor Master-Based Mini-Game with Piranhas, Sharks (with 'Frickin' Laser Beams Attached to their Heads'), Zombies, 3 Different Islands, and MORE!!! Not to mention that it also has Open Fient support (basically a chat/thread-like system custom-designed for the game and its players) and a Buddy Challenge system too. Currently, Pocket God has a 4 Star Average Rating for all versions on iTunes. But lately while reading some of these reviews, negative ones pop up more and more often...

-------------------------------------------~SOON~ -------------------------------------------------
So what is it about Pocket God that's making all of these regular fans complain? Shouldn't they just shut up and be grateful?...Well if you think about it, there's actually some pretty good reasons. 1. Although Bolt Creative probably receives hundreds to thousands of fan suggestions a day (whether through email, iTunes, etc.), there is a very large amount of them that are the same. Fans clearly want some of the missing basics, like clothing, genders, hut-structures or some type of house/home for the pygmy characters, etc. These requests have been made for a LONG TIME yet the duo continues to more or less do their own thing, which is good, just not necessarily what people are looking forward to seeing in the game. Not only are some fans just fed up with the fact that they aren't being listened to at all, some believe the app is actually now OVER crowded. This statement also has some validity to it, not only does Pocket God seem to take longer and longer to start-up with each update, the drop-down menu in the game is becoming pretty full and there is just too much to keep up with that simply results in slow-loading times, and other irritating results. And most importantly, a lot of people just don't feel like Pocket God is as fun as it used to be. For reasons hard to perfectly explain, some feel that the app has just lost its touch, and without regular-sim-type-life features such as clothes and homes, the game can get boring once you've had it for awhile because it doesn't seem as fun anymore to even attempt to make your pygmies tell a story or explore new combinations of deaths and gifts. Even with new episodes/updates (which has slowed down a lot to releases on a 3-4 week basis), after the new feature is played just once, the game goes back to being its regular old-self. Continuing to play the game just to achieve better scores in the mini-games isn't the same and isn't as fun because it's not really a unique experience each time. Most would agree that if Pocket God lacks anything right now, it's the fact that there is no unique experience. Since the game is done feature by feature, the way you play doesn't generate random experiences. Instead it just repeats simple actions over and over as you switch to find one that is entertaining enough. ...Pocket God now has dropped to the spot of Number 21 on the Top 100 Paid List and Number 71 on the Top 100 Grossing List, as it seems to basically continue to drop on a regular basis except for when a new update is released. So the real question is...what's next? Could this all be the beginning of the end of Pocket God? Well according to the developers, they have "about ten ideas for standalone Pocket God games." And that if any of these sequels are actually developed, the original Pocket God would still continue to receive updates...just at an EVEN SLOWER rate. Despite this all, Bolt Creative is still currently working on the next update which will be the second part of the zombie trilogy episodes and will be titled "Good Will Haunting".

-------------------------------------------~CONCLUSION~-----------------------------------------
So for now, the future of Pocket God is really at an unpredictable state. For the first time in its history, we are seeing sale & popularity rates for the game go continuously down. It would seem as if Bolt Creative must now listen and reply to the fans' requests or they may not have any chance of a great recovery or revival. Future developments such as their in-construction plans to bring Pocket God to other platforms and create sequels separate from the game also seem to discourage any hope for a re-boost in original Pocket God popularity; for although these projects may seem cool, they will take away from some amount of future updates for the current available game. But knowing that Dave & Allan have proved themselves to be pretty creative people, it is still likely that they will figure out something! Not to mention that although this is the first-seen fall in Pocket God hype, the game has still done incredibly well in-total, selling literally millions of copies on the App Store and being really the first app ever to have such a huge impact on the app culture world. No matter what lies ahead for Pocket God, The Tap Dat App Team™ and many more fans will continue to be right behind the game, taking this exciting journey to see where it will all end up. - As personal fans of the game since our first purchase of it on May 19th, we thank you for taking the time to read this article and officially encourage you to buy Pocket God if you have not already for at least the sake of being able to take part in the first ever App Phenomenon! =)

Appload™ #3 - I Am T-Pain, {TFLN}, Swine Flu Scanner, & MORE!!!

Author: TapDatApp // Category:

What's up everyone? Happy Labor Day Weekend! Hope it's all going good where you're at; we got a couple people out sick but other than that it is all good! So let's get it started, here's your Appload™ #3 from Tap Dat App™:

  • Touch Web is a full-screen landscape web browser. The options and maneuver controls are not the best, but it is still nice to give it a go while it is FREE for a LIMITED TIME ONLY.
  • Quicky Web Browser is the new Safari. The TEAM has been using this constantly for over a week now. It is really fast because it doesn't save as much RAM onto your iPhone/iTouch each time you use it and offers so many great features like Lock Rotation, Optional Full Screen Browsing, Quick Homepage Access, Offline Bookmark Browsing, etc.! GET for $.99
  • Mr.AaH!! is an awesome new game where your little stick character swings like Spider-Man onto little podium-like-stands. The concept is simple and the game is done very well. Try out the Lite Version and then go ahead and GET the full one for just $.99
  • Pheasant Hunt 3D is a unique hunting game on sale for $.99. It has pretty nice graphics but some awkward controls no matter which option you pick, they don't move with you very well. It's fun to explore around the farm, but the challenges really don't leave you coming back for more. So check it out, but we don't highly recommend it...FORGET
  • {TFLN}: Texts From Last Night is a site much like FML, just a lot raunchier. They have an app out now for the site and it works pretty nicely. With the recently updated Version 1.1, there a lot of good bonus features like posting to Facebook or Twitter, etc. If you enjoy the site, GET it for $.99
  • Swine Flu Scanner is the ONLY novelty (prank) app we have ever bought. Like most people, we tend to think these types of apps are stupid. But this one is just freakin awesome! You can secretly control to what extent you want your friend's swine flu results to be and the animation of the scan is awesome! Once they become terrified, direct them over to "Dr. Ham Funk" who will say something funny and then let you try one of 3 experimental cures that will have you splitting sides! For a genuine good laugh and conversation starter, pick this up (GET) for $.99
  • Last but not least, one of our favorite apps in a long long time...I Am T-Pain. Created by the rap star himself and the premium app developers at Smule, plug in your headphones and speak into the mic to get that awesome Auto-Tune effect that TONS of artists are using now-a-days. You can even sing a bad note, and all you will hear is an awesome voice echo change that makes you literally sound like a recording artist! BUT THAT'S NOT ALL: It comes preloaded with some of T-Pain hits that you can use as background music while you sing-a-long to the lyrics on screen. There are also In-App Purchases available so you can get even more T-Pain songs for your app, with more on the way as well. This app is really cool. SERIOUSLY, to get Auto-Tune downloaded on a regular computer, you would have to pay over $100!!! But I Am T-Pain is only $2.99 and we really do think that's a steal. You will have a lot of fun with this app and it's bound to be a hit at parties. Not to mention it is an amazing way for T-Pain to advertise himself and for all his fans to support him. GET!
Well folks, congratulations. You just received your weekly Appload™. We got some more awesome stuff including really fun contests coming up so make sure you don't go anywhere! Remember to spread the word, Tap Dat App™ is taking off!

Appload™ #2 - Pac-Man: REMIX, FerrariGT, Guinness World Records, & MORE!!!

Author: TapDatApp // Category:
Hey yall! Sorry we haven't had much to say on the blog for a few weeks, but honestly it was just because there was nothing to say! The app world seems to have slowed down for a couple of weeks, but now enough time has gone by so that we know of enough good apps to let you in on! So here is your usual Appload!™ - (With FREE Apps now always listed first for readers who want quick access to easy downloads!)

  • First off, Facebook for iPhone 3.0 was submitted over a week ago. We are anxiously awaiting this update but from the early screenshots and reviews, it looks like a big improvement! So make sure to pick it up if you use Facebook (plus, it's FREE).
  • SnapTell is that type of app where you take a picture of something and it looks up the best price online for that item. Unlike all the other apps similar to this one, SnapTell actually works. Haha but seriously, we tested it on multiple items and even took pictures of the covers from semi-faraway (you take a picture of the cover of the item with this app versus the bar code) and it was STILL able to recognize and search for the product online! Not only does it work accurately, but it also provides information links to places like YouTube & Wikipedia along with cheap prices from eBay, Barnes & Noble, etc. The app has even been featured by Apple in iPhone commercials (it can be seen on the phone, but isn't one of the apps pressed and detailed on...). So for a useful iPhone app that will surely come in handy, GET for FREE
  • Pac-Man: REMIX is an insanely fun title especially for people who love Pac-Man like we do. It puts a cool 3D twist on the game with a main mode that is basically a "story-mode" like function. It is pretty easy (but we find this to be a relief, as some games are just too hard) but you can always go back and replay the levels in freeplay mode. We would like to see an online scoreboard added and maybe an OpenFient-like buddy challenge system, but we still enjoy it as it is. GET for $4.99 (Limited time only, ARGG we payed $5.99!!!)
  • Prairie Chute is another one of those "parachute" like games now listed under "What's Hot". With a really nice menu & creative characters, the game is very appealing. Unfortunately, the gameplay isn't "superb". The levels are distinct (meaning: not random) but they are more generated versus custom created. Therefore, it kinda gets boring fast. Some updates have been confirmed to be on the way, so there is still hope for the app. With that being said, I'm sure there are others out there for which this game is right up their alley! So either Take A BET for $.99 OR DON'T.
  • Flight of the Hamsters is a direct CartoonNetwork.com flash game import. Although it has been slightly "dumbed down" to work on the iPhone & iTouch, it is still basically just as fun with all of the same regular features still included. The game basically is similar to "Kitten Cannon" and equally as good. The only real thing missing is an online scoreboard. We say GET for $.99
  • FerrariGT has finally been lowered to a price of ONLY $.99 (previously like $4.99 or something) and having loved the Lite version of this game, we just had to get it! The game is pretty to explain, you RACE! Like in Need for Speed: Underground etc., it has the same concept with good graphics and controls too. And there are quite a few modes available too! An update that will make online multiplayer possible is supposedly in development for the app, so grab it beforehand so that the price won't go up! GET
  • Guinness World Records has gone on sale for an astonishing $.99. I've had my eye on this game for quite awhile and was super excited to hear that it had been lowered to a really reasonably cheap price! The game lets you customize a 3D Avatar/Character and explore the globe for new challenges. Although not all of the mini-game/challenges are all-that-special, there is SO MUCH content, unlockable bonuses, quick facts, premium clothes for your avatar, etc. to unlock and replay to achieve. Once signed up on a specific site server, you can also view online high scores and records. GET
That's all for now! Thanks again for supporting our blog and make sure to stay tuned for more Apploads™ only on your one source for the low-down on the latest and best in iPhone/iTouch applications...Tap Dat App!™

Appload™ - Doodle Jump, I Dig It, MiniGore, & MORE!!!

Author: TapDatApp // Category:
Hey everyone! Sorry for the delay between posts, the Tap Dat App™ Team has been on vacation. But now we are back! To help keep things running fast & smooth: we are going to start writing more segments called "Apploads™". These sections will be able to talk about more than one app in one post while still giving enough critique so that you can tell if the app is right for you or not. We have a lot to cover today, SO LET'S GET STARTED!

  • We recently download "Nano Rally" and were very disappointed with what it had to deliver. This game truly has a great concept where you drive around in a tiny car amongst giant objects in different rooms of a house. Unfortunately, the controls (having both tilt & arrows available) are just AWFUL. I became very frustrated with this game, which doesn't even have real live multiplayer racing, so honestly we give this one a "FORGET" until further updates...
  • Next on the review line is "Helium Voice". The creators were thoughtful enough to supply us with a free copy of the app, thus we had no reason not to try it out! If you're a kid, you'll love this thing. Plug in some headphones and use your mic to listen to your distorted chipmunk voice as you speak! It's basically "Fred: COME ALIVE!" Therefore, we are labeling this app: "GET"
  • "ShapeShape" is another game that's been getting a lot of publicity lately. We downloaded it and have pretty mixed reviews when it comes to the game. It has been updated frequently lately and some nice 3.0 features have been added but as for basic gameplay, I find ShapeShape lacks substance. It's a concept that for me, just doesn't have enough to keep me playing. You should check it out and read the info for yourself, but in real game critique, this lies under the category of "FORGET"
  • We also fianlly got "Doodle Jump" and I've pretty much fallen addicted to it. It's not rocket science, but it's still an easily lovable concept that keeps you tapping away at it! Not much else to say but the fact that it is definitely a good quality-made game, "GET"
  • "I Dig It" has leaped to Number 2 on the Top Paid Apps recently and it's no wonder why! The game rocks! If you've ever played "Motherload" on sites like MiniClip, you will without a doubt like this app! It's nicely detailed and has a REVOLUTIONARY droid-stick like control pad! Updates are continuing to happen and the game's great when you're bored or wanna play a serious app and make some high scores! "GET"
  • "MiniGore" is a recently released 3D action game with some really cool control droid-sticks and great graphics. The game has had hype and suspense around it since May and pretty much lives up to expectations. The only disappointment is that there is no storymode yet. New episodes/updates will be released regularly so there is definitely more to come. But currently, with only one "episode", the game is just a "shoot to get your high score" type-of scenario with no real obstacles or objectives besides that. Still, the game is pretty impressive and is sure to grow to even more than it already is, without a doubt I recommend you snag it while it's only $.99! "GET"
  • Another fun little app is "Balloonimals", the creators lent us a free copy of the app and we were thrilled to try it out! You blow into the mic and twist your phone around to create tons of 3D Balloon Animals! Great if you have children for it will really amaze & entertain them! If you have kids, "GET" this app!
  • We were also given a code for "Inhale Here" graciously and although it has the same concept as "Helium Voice" the app is still a little different. You talk in and then your 30 second clip is played back to you in a chipmunk-like voice afterwards. Not as responsive or interactive as the other title, so we give it a "POSSIBLE" rating.
Thank you so much for reading our blog and thanks once again to all the developers who are so kind as to let us test out their apps for free! Stay tunes for more Apploads™ ONLY on Tap Dat App™!

The Moron Test - 4 Stars

Author: TapDatApp // Category:

Now up for the latest review is "The Moron Test" - Check It Out:

The Moron Test was developed by DistinctDev for the iPhone & iTouch. Okay, so first off let me mention that I held out on this one for a long time. For quite awhile now, it has been in the Top 25 Most Paid Apps or so, but it never really seemed worth it until the latest update. But I can now sincerely say, I am happy I bought this game. The questions are tricky, clever, and well-thought out. It's a lot of fun to figure out and is nicely accommodated by charming graphics and catchy music. It's a real BLAST to hand this thing around at family parties and see people get stumped when they don't think all of their moves through thoroughly. This being said, I still hope that we will continue to see more updates as to make this game more fun for people who have already completed it and have spent enough time trying to be their own high score... For some cheap fun, I do suggest you buy (but strictly if it's on sale for $.99) The Moron Test - 4 Stars ☆☆☆☆

MUST.EAT.BIRDS. - 5 Stars

Author: TapDatApp // Category:

Now we shall review “MUST.EAT.BIRDS.” - Check It Out:

MUST.EAT.BIRDS. was developed by Mediatonic for the iPhone & iTouch. MUST.EAT.BIRDS. is a really fun and charming game. Although you may have played a game like this where you slingshot something into the air before, this game still brings some unique qualities to the table and is also the best of these types of games. The app’s music is purely adorable and really made all of us here at the Tap Dat App™ Team want to get up and have a Japanese Dance Party!!! All in all, this game seriously delivers for only $.99 – you have cute graphics, fun & innovative game play (with a lot of levels, features, and assorted extras), and just simply tons of nice eye candy. The game has a very STRONG lasting appeal as you will want to whip this thing out several times amongst friends and scream out in Japanese style “MAXIMUM BAKE!” as the game does the same. For some awesome long-lasting fun that you will really enjoy, I definitely recommend you buy MUST.EAT.BIRDS. – 5 Stars ☆☆☆☆☆
