Inside the Pocket God Phenomenon: Then, Now, & Soon

Author: TapDatApp // Category:

On January 9th of 2009, Bolt Creative published an app for the iPhone & iTouch that would go on to set records. Starting out with a simple concept where the user controls a bunch of islanders, the app was the first ever to introduce constant "Episodes", otherwise known as updates where new features would be added at least once a month. Now with over 25 updates in its history, it has become one of the most popular apps of all time and created an insanely massive following of fans. Today, we will explore this game and reflect on the huge impact it has had on the "iDevice" world. And despite previous fantastic sale-rates, some fans are starting to question the app, the creators, and how long the fad will and can last. For the first time in the game's history, regular players have left some negative feedback on the app's page on iTunes. Some are unsatisfied with its latest direction, some think the app is becoming over-crowded with features that don't match up to their suggestions, and some simply think it has lost its fun quality. How did this all start? How has the app changed? and Where does it all go from here? It's time to find out, because this is:
"Inside the Pocket God Phenomenon: Then, Now, & Soon"

Pocket God was created by the duo-team of programmer Dave Castelnuovo & designer Allan Dye. They have stated in interviews that they got inspiration for the game and its crazy characters from watching shows such as South Park. After the launch of Pocket God (which was not immediately a success), Allan & Dave chose a very smart marketing move by introducing new "episodes/updates", which added new features so that their customers could continue to constantly get more out of the game. Soon, Pocket God was being updated on a regular basis of every 2 weeks or so. The game started to attract a lot of attention and climbed its way up to the top of the Top 100 Paid Apps List. It reached a large peak of popularity around May during the Dinosaur Island Trilogy Updates (Episodes 15, 16, & 17). And during the summer season, it remained in the Top 10 for an extensive period of time. It was official: Pocket God was a huge hit!

As of September 25th, there has been 26 Episodes in total. Pocket God now contains a huge variety of features, mini-games, etc. This includes: Volcano, Gravity Effects, Earthquake, Storms, Day-Evening-Night Change, Dancing, Giant Boulder, Vampire Bat, Hurricane, Fishing, Fire Ants, Naming-Process, Dinosaur, Tsunami, Fire, Dodo Bird, Doodle Jump-Based Mini-Game, Harbor Master-Based Mini-Game with Piranhas, Sharks (with 'Frickin' Laser Beams Attached to their Heads'), Zombies, 3 Different Islands, and MORE!!! Not to mention that it also has Open Fient support (basically a chat/thread-like system custom-designed for the game and its players) and a Buddy Challenge system too. Currently, Pocket God has a 4 Star Average Rating for all versions on iTunes. But lately while reading some of these reviews, negative ones pop up more and more often...

-------------------------------------------~SOON~ -------------------------------------------------
So what is it about Pocket God that's making all of these regular fans complain? Shouldn't they just shut up and be grateful?...Well if you think about it, there's actually some pretty good reasons. 1. Although Bolt Creative probably receives hundreds to thousands of fan suggestions a day (whether through email, iTunes, etc.), there is a very large amount of them that are the same. Fans clearly want some of the missing basics, like clothing, genders, hut-structures or some type of house/home for the pygmy characters, etc. These requests have been made for a LONG TIME yet the duo continues to more or less do their own thing, which is good, just not necessarily what people are looking forward to seeing in the game. Not only are some fans just fed up with the fact that they aren't being listened to at all, some believe the app is actually now OVER crowded. This statement also has some validity to it, not only does Pocket God seem to take longer and longer to start-up with each update, the drop-down menu in the game is becoming pretty full and there is just too much to keep up with that simply results in slow-loading times, and other irritating results. And most importantly, a lot of people just don't feel like Pocket God is as fun as it used to be. For reasons hard to perfectly explain, some feel that the app has just lost its touch, and without regular-sim-type-life features such as clothes and homes, the game can get boring once you've had it for awhile because it doesn't seem as fun anymore to even attempt to make your pygmies tell a story or explore new combinations of deaths and gifts. Even with new episodes/updates (which has slowed down a lot to releases on a 3-4 week basis), after the new feature is played just once, the game goes back to being its regular old-self. Continuing to play the game just to achieve better scores in the mini-games isn't the same and isn't as fun because it's not really a unique experience each time. Most would agree that if Pocket God lacks anything right now, it's the fact that there is no unique experience. Since the game is done feature by feature, the way you play doesn't generate random experiences. Instead it just repeats simple actions over and over as you switch to find one that is entertaining enough. ...Pocket God now has dropped to the spot of Number 21 on the Top 100 Paid List and Number 71 on the Top 100 Grossing List, as it seems to basically continue to drop on a regular basis except for when a new update is released. So the real question is...what's next? Could this all be the beginning of the end of Pocket God? Well according to the developers, they have "about ten ideas for standalone Pocket God games." And that if any of these sequels are actually developed, the original Pocket God would still continue to receive updates...just at an EVEN SLOWER rate. Despite this all, Bolt Creative is still currently working on the next update which will be the second part of the zombie trilogy episodes and will be titled "Good Will Haunting".

So for now, the future of Pocket God is really at an unpredictable state. For the first time in its history, we are seeing sale & popularity rates for the game go continuously down. It would seem as if Bolt Creative must now listen and reply to the fans' requests or they may not have any chance of a great recovery or revival. Future developments such as their in-construction plans to bring Pocket God to other platforms and create sequels separate from the game also seem to discourage any hope for a re-boost in original Pocket God popularity; for although these projects may seem cool, they will take away from some amount of future updates for the current available game. But knowing that Dave & Allan have proved themselves to be pretty creative people, it is still likely that they will figure out something! Not to mention that although this is the first-seen fall in Pocket God hype, the game has still done incredibly well in-total, selling literally millions of copies on the App Store and being really the first app ever to have such a huge impact on the app culture world. No matter what lies ahead for Pocket God, The Tap Dat App Team™ and many more fans will continue to be right behind the game, taking this exciting journey to see where it will all end up. - As personal fans of the game since our first purchase of it on May 19th, we thank you for taking the time to read this article and officially encourage you to buy Pocket God if you have not already for at least the sake of being able to take part in the first ever App Phenomenon! =)

What's up everyone? Happy Labor Day Weekend! Hope it's all going good where you're at; we got a couple people out sick but other than that it is all good! So let's get it started, here's your Appload™ #3 from Tap Dat App™:

  • Touch Web is a full-screen landscape web browser. The options and maneuver controls are not the best, but it is still nice to give it a go while it is FREE for a LIMITED TIME ONLY.
  • Quicky Web Browser is the new Safari. The TEAM has been using this constantly for over a week now. It is really fast because it doesn't save as much RAM onto your iPhone/iTouch each time you use it and offers so many great features like Lock Rotation, Optional Full Screen Browsing, Quick Homepage Access, Offline Bookmark Browsing, etc.! GET for $.99
  • Mr.AaH!! is an awesome new game where your little stick character swings like Spider-Man onto little podium-like-stands. The concept is simple and the game is done very well. Try out the Lite Version and then go ahead and GET the full one for just $.99
  • Pheasant Hunt 3D is a unique hunting game on sale for $.99. It has pretty nice graphics but some awkward controls no matter which option you pick, they don't move with you very well. It's fun to explore around the farm, but the challenges really don't leave you coming back for more. So check it out, but we don't highly recommend it...FORGET
  • {TFLN}: Texts From Last Night is a site much like FML, just a lot raunchier. They have an app out now for the site and it works pretty nicely. With the recently updated Version 1.1, there a lot of good bonus features like posting to Facebook or Twitter, etc. If you enjoy the site, GET it for $.99
  • Swine Flu Scanner is the ONLY novelty (prank) app we have ever bought. Like most people, we tend to think these types of apps are stupid. But this one is just freakin awesome! You can secretly control to what extent you want your friend's swine flu results to be and the animation of the scan is awesome! Once they become terrified, direct them over to "Dr. Ham Funk" who will say something funny and then let you try one of 3 experimental cures that will have you splitting sides! For a genuine good laugh and conversation starter, pick this up (GET) for $.99
  • Last but not least, one of our favorite apps in a long long time...I Am T-Pain. Created by the rap star himself and the premium app developers at Smule, plug in your headphones and speak into the mic to get that awesome Auto-Tune effect that TONS of artists are using now-a-days. You can even sing a bad note, and all you will hear is an awesome voice echo change that makes you literally sound like a recording artist! BUT THAT'S NOT ALL: It comes preloaded with some of T-Pain hits that you can use as background music while you sing-a-long to the lyrics on screen. There are also In-App Purchases available so you can get even more T-Pain songs for your app, with more on the way as well. This app is really cool. SERIOUSLY, to get Auto-Tune downloaded on a regular computer, you would have to pay over $100!!! But I Am T-Pain is only $2.99 and we really do think that's a steal. You will have a lot of fun with this app and it's bound to be a hit at parties. Not to mention it is an amazing way for T-Pain to advertise himself and for all his fans to support him. GET!
